How are the moon phases calculated?
The Moon takes about 29.5 days to complete a cycle (the synodic month), from one new moon to the next. In that time it passes through the four main phases — new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter — and the intermediate waxing and waning phases.
The dates on this page are calculated with an astronomical algorithm (Meeus), which gives the exact moment of each phase in universal time (UTC); depending on your time zone, a phase may fall on the day before or after.
